Hola a todos,

Check your grade on Blackboard to see if you need to take the final test tomorrow.  If you have an A or A-, you do not need to take the final test.  If you do need to take it (you have a B+ or below), study the SAM exercises that were assigned on the living syllabus (it's NOT necessary to study every single one available online, although they offer extra practice and that's always good).  Rosetta Stone should help a great deal as well.  Tomorrow you will work alone and also in groups for the final, without notes, book, etc. The test is multiple choice, but it is definitely  not easy.

Learning Report #6 and Rosetta Stone are due tomorrow at midnight, both online.  

Hasta mañana... y si no les veo mañana--

Resumen:
Revisamos la tarea, hicimos varias actividades de producción oral, y presenté colores, la ropa, y expresiones con tener.

La tarea:
1) LR #5 due next Friday.
2) Review stem-changing verbs.

Resumen:
Revisamos la tarea (la lectura sobre Machu Picchu, y la actividad sobre el tiempo en diferentes partes del mundo).  Practicamos los verbos reflexivos en un juego.  Revisamos cómo conjugar los verbos reflexivos, vimos cómo decir la hora, y hubo una introducción a los verbos con cambios en el raíz (stem-changing verbs), y también a los usos de SABER y CONOCER.

La tarea:
1)  LR #4 due Friday the 17th.
2) Finish exercises on the back of the handout on telling time.
3) Do exercise in handout on SABER y CONOCER.
4) Review stem-changing verbs on the handout given in class.
5) SAM Capitulo 4 Actividades 5, 8,12, 13,15, 17, 18; also Capitulo 5 Actividades 1,2,4, 5 ,8

Resumen:
Revisamos la tarea a través de (=through) actividades orales.  Hablamos de cómo son ustedes (introvertido v. extrovertido, por ejemplo, qué les gustaría hacer, y cómo un se siente (estoy triste, feliz, preocupado, etc) en diferentes circunstancias.  Revisamos los meses, las estaciones del año, el tiempo, y los verbos reflexivos.  Hablamos de Machu Picchu brevemente, en preparación para la lectura (tarea) para  la próxima semana.

La tarea:
1) LR #4 deadline is postponed.  It will be due Friday the 17th.  No more make up reports after that date.

First, skim the text for cognates and note them to right of the text.  Do the pre-reading skimming exercise to summarize each section.  Then read the article.  After reading, answer the T/F questions at the end.  We will review this in class.

Rosetta Stone. Remember, it doesn't matter what you choose to do (you can skip around, not only by topic and type of activity but also level) but you must do 15 hours' worth.

Resumen:
Hoy ofrecemos dulces uno al otro diciendo, "¿Te gustaría un dulce?"  En esta manera, usamos la forma condicional de "gustar" para ofrecer comida en una manera educada.  Revisamos la tarea de MIT OpenCourseware, usando SER o ESTAR en las frases.  Revisamos la tarea de "la ciudad de México."  Observamos la forma y el uso del tiempo verbal el presente progresivo para describir acciones en progreso.

La próxima semana vamos a... 
1) jugar al "Bingo: ¿qué te gustaría hacer?" (that you read and prepared for today)
2) tener un quiz acerca de:  adjetivos con SER y ESTAR; verbos irregulares en la forma "yo"; los días de la semana; "gustar"
3) ver los verbos reflexivos, y el tiempo, los meses y las estaciones

La tarea:
1) Estudiar las partes del cuerpo y los verbos reflexivos en Quizlet.  We will work on how to conjugate the reflexive verbs next week, but in the meantime you can memorize their meanings.

5) Handout:  ¿Cómo son ustedes?  Answer the questions in the first column about yourself.  The other two columns you will fill out as part of a speaking activity next week in which you interview 2 of your classmates.

Resumen:
Hoy tomamos el examen parcial (midterm exam).  Después del descanso, trabajamos sobre los lugares en la ciudad, y luego vimos el uso de ESTAR para ubicación (ESTAR for location), el uso de SER para de describir a una persona y ESTAR para describir sus emociones o estado de ánimo.

La tarea:

1) Handout from class "La ciudad de México": Match the pictures with descriptions on the handout.  Find the pictures on the Tues/Thursday class page (link at top of this page), for martes el 24 de octubre.
2) Extra Credit:  Do the worksheet "El orgullo de ser mexicano" using this video (link).
3) Handout from class in which you decide if you must use SER or ESTAR in each sentence.  Use quizlet sets "SER + adj." and "ESTAR + adj."
4) Read the handout called "¿Te gustaría...?" and check off any activities you would like to do, in preparation for a speaking activity next week.
5)
 SAM Capitulo 3 Actividades 2, 3, 6, 12, 14.  Expect a quiz on these.

Learning Report #3 will be due next Friday (Nov. 3).  Please challenge yourself.  It must be a different activity than the past two. Remember to follow the rubric for full credit.

Resumen:
Hoy jugamos a un juego que es similar a "Apples to Apples."  Luego, revisamos la tarea:  el video Soleá, y las conjugaciones de los verbos (el paquete de ejercicios).  Vimos la conjugación de los verbos que son irregulares en la forma "yo."  En pares, practicamos verbalmente las conjugaciones de verbos regulares.

La tarea:
1) Prepare for a test on (based on the SAM exercises):
   a) SER, ESTAR, TENER, LLAMARSE y IR
   b) los verbos regulares
   c) los verbos irregulares en la forma "yo" (here is a handout as reference)
   d) gustar
   e) tener que + infitnitivo
   f) ir a + infinitivo

2) Learn "Lugares en la ciudad" (Quizlet set)

4) If you didn't hand in the 2 written paragraphs from the packet, do them for next Friday. They are: a)  on the second to last page, a paragraph about what you do most days, and b) from the last page, a paragraph describing a day in the life of Juan in the video Soleá.

Resumen:
Hicimos una actividad oral con preguntas acerca de nuestros gustos ("¿Te gusta la música clásica?"  etc.).  Revisamos la tarea de la "Evolución de la Bamba" y "¿Qué hay en mi bolso?".  Revisamos el handout acerca de nuestros pendientes ("Tengo que ir al supermercado." etc.) y luego hablamos de nuestros planes ("Voy a celebrar mi cumpleaños el fin de semana." etc.)  Observamos la conjugación de los verbos regulares -AR, -ER y -IR y notamos los patrones, similitudes y diferencias entre las formas.  Escuchamos la canción "Vivir mi vida" de Marc Anthony.

La tarea:
1) Learning Report #2.  I will move the deadline to Tuesday the 17th at midnight.
2) I gave you a big packet on verb conjugations.  Please do all of it, except the Tic Tac Toe game (that's for class).  We will review it all in class.  Please write the short paragraphs assigned -- those you will hand in.  You will also need to watch the video Soleá with the activity that is on the last page.

Resumen:
Escuchamos una canción para identificar algunas frases.  Luego, nombramos una serie de objetos en una mochila y jugamos a "Charades."  Luego, revisamos el vocabulario en Quizlet, y antes del descanso tomamos un quiz.  
 Hablamos de la posesión de objetos personales ("Es mi reloj."  "El libro es de Miguel."  "Las llaves son de Andrés."  "¿Es tu cuaderno?"  etc.) en grupos pequeños.  Recibieron hojas para escuchar a niños que hablan sobre las cosas que tienen en sus mochilas.  Hablamos de gustos ("Me gusta dormir."  "Te gustan las manzanas.")  

La tarea:

Semana 4:  viernes el 22 de septiembre

Resumen:
We did calculations in Spanish -- adición, sustracción, multiplicación, y división, then took a quiz.  We discussed how to do the Learning Report (it's all in the syllabus), and went over ocupaciones in Quizlet.  Then we described famous people by name, nationality, age and occupation, using the handout provided in class.

Please note:  Next week I am going to a teaching conference and so we will not have class.  I will see you in two weeks (on October 6).

La tarea:
1) Learning Report #1 is due on Friday the 29th posted to the discussion board on Blackboard before midnight.  All instructions are in the syllabus. Remember, make sure you check the rubric, to get full credit.
2) Due for next class (Oct. 6):  SAM Capitulo 1 Actividades 7, 9, 11, 12, 14, 15, 22
3) Due for Oct. 6:  Lab Manual Chapter 1 Actividades 9, 10
4) Study Quizlet sets "Objetos personales" and "Las acciones" for a quiz on Oct. 6.
5) I handed out two readings for homework related to Chapter 1's theme "Hispanics in the U.S."  This one discusses Puerto Rico's relationship with the U.S. and this one discusses Mexico's relationship with the U.S.
