Semana 2: Jueves, el 6 de septiembre

9/6/2018

Resumen de la clase:
We worked on dictations in Spanish -- spelling our first and last names (nombres y apellidos) for each other in groups as if we were filling out forms, then we did a dictation to discriminate between letters, and finally a dictation spelling names of Latin American capitals.  We did a few trabalenguas (tongue twisters) to work on pronunciation of "ll," "rr" and "j".  In the 9:05 class we played Quizlet Live for capitals and countries, while in the 12:15 class we looked at the difference between formal and informal language when meeting people (use of Tú  y  Usted).

La tarea para el martes:
1) SAM (find it on Blackboard):  Page (página) 17 Actividades 1 y 2; página 18 Actividad 5; página 19 Actividad 8; página 21 Actividad 14.  Use the conjugation charts on page 27 of Convivencia as needed.  Check your answers in the answer key (also on Blackboard).

2) Practice conjugations of SER, ESTAR and LLAMARSE on Quizlet (make sure in "options" that you answer with the definition):
SER:  https://quizlet.com/_55tgbv
ESTAR:
https://quizlet.com/_55xkem
LLAMARSE:    https://quizlet.com/_55xm41

3) Learn the numbers 0 to 20 from this Quizlet set (you don't need to learn beyond 20 for Tuesday, but if you want to study ahead, keep going...!):

A heads up:  We might have a quiz Tuesday on the SAM activities... Come in with questions if you had problems.

Semana 2: martes el 4 de septiembre

9/4/2018

Resumen de la clase (Summary of the Class):
We reviewed the homework -- the crossword puzzle (el crucigrama), the exercise on cognates (cognados), the matching exercise on useful expressions for the class (frases útiles para el salón de clase), and the alphabet (el alfabeto).

La tarea para el jueves (Homework for Thursday):

1) Practice spelling out your name, using the letters as they are said in Spanish.  Practice your first name, your last name, your friend's name, some family members' names.  If you need to review the alphabet, use the Quizlet set I assigned.
2) Start learning and practicing the pronunciation of countries and capitals in Spanish at these links:

Jueves, el 30 de agosto de 2018

8/29/2018

Resumen de la clase (Summary of the class)
We went over questions you had about the syllabus, and also quickly reviewed questions I asked you about the key points in the syllabus.  In the 9:05 class, there was a question about what other resources are available for learning Spanish and we looked at the resources in the Gateway lib guide for Spanish 101 and also the resources (some of which are the same) on my website.   We also had an interesting discussion in the 9:05 class about what strengths heritage and native speakers bring to our class, and what strengths second language learners bring to our class.

In both classes, I collected the handouts with questions about the syllabus and about the chart on page 6 & 7 about language learning (links to handouts below in last class's post, if you missed it). We quickly reviewed the answers about the video "Hola, ¿qué tal?"

In the 12:15 class, we practiced introducing ourselves and this time added in questions and answers about where we are from.  We briefly looked at the conjugation charts for the verbs LLAMARSE and SER.

I am very excited and happy about our classes!  I feel really fortunate to be working with you, who are so motivated, positive and have so much to share!

La tarea para el martes (Homework for Tuesday)
1) On page 27 of Convivencia we have verb conjugation charts for LLAMARSE and SER.  (We didn't have time to look at this in the 9:05 class.)  For some of you, conjugation charts offer no surprises, but for others, they are completely new.  The main concept in conjugating a verb is that the ending of a verb will tell us who is doing the action.  Please try doing the crossword puzzle on page 15 of Convivencia, using the conjugation charts as reference.  If this is confusing, don't worry.  By the end of class on Tuesday you will understand these conjugations perfectly.  (I won't collect this, but I will check it.)
2) Do the activity "Cognados" on page 15.  If you don't know how to pronounce the words, plug them into Wordreference to hear how they sound. (WordReference, by the way, is a much better reference for translations than Google Translate.)  Notice how the Spanish words differ from the English pronunciation of their cognates. Noticing those differences will come in handy later. (I won't collect this but will check with you.)
3) On page 16 of Convivencia, we have a list of useful phrases for the classroom.  Please read through these and do the matching exercise on page 17.  If possible, find a native speaker who can read the phrases out loud to you to help you with pronunciation.  We will review this in class on Tuesday. (I won't collect it, but will check it.)
4) Finally, start learning the alphabet in Spanish here on Quizlet.  For those of you unfamiliar with Quizlet, you can use it in a regular browser on your computer, or on a free app for your smartphone.  Once on the page for the alphabet, go to "Flashcards" to learn the names of the letters.  I recommend that, once you are on the flashcards page, you go to "Options" (lower left corner) and choose the options "audio on" and "answer with: both." As you listen, repeat after the recording and say the letter and the word out loud.

¡Nos vemos el martes!  ¡Que tengan un buen fin de semana!
(See you Tuesday!  Have a good weekend!)

Semana 1:  el 28 de agosto

7/30/2018

Resumen de la clase (Summary of class):
Today was the first day, and everyone wrote down on small cards three words that came to mind when they thought of "Spanish." We'll use that for a short discussion on Thursday. Then we discussed the course textbook (Convivencia).  You filled out the "First Day Questionnaire" (p. 4 of Convivencia).  We did an activity in which everyone introduced themselves to each other (sort of a "speed-dating" activity).  In the 9:05 class we had time to discuss expectations, which follow below, and which I hope the 12:15 class can add to on Thursday.

These are the class expectations, as I remember them (I forgot to take a picture of the board, so I hope class members can improve the list on Thursday):
- Respect everyone (Respetar)
- Learn about the cultural knowledge and life experiences everyone brings to the class
- Come prepared.
- Take notes.
- Listen to others, no side discussions in full-class discussions.
- Ask questions.
- Come on time, leave on time.
- Keep cell phones on silent (no texting in class).

Homework for Thursday (La tarea para el jueves):
In class, you received the handouts, but in case you missed it, there are links below to the handouts.
1) Read the syllabus (you can find it on Blackboard), and answer these questions to hand in.
2)  Read pages 6 and 7 in Convivencia and hand in these questions.
3) Watch this video and answer the questions on page 12 of Convivencia.  (This video presents language we'll be using in the next few days to introduce ourselves and to meet others.  If it is new to you, translations of key phrases are at the bottom of page 12).
4) Bring a three-ring binder with dividers and the SAM excerpts printed out.

¡Gracias a todos por dos clases excelentes!  ¡Nos vemos el jueves!
