Jueves el 27 de septiembre

9/27/2018

Resumen de la clase:
Aprendimos (we learned) la canción infantil "Me gusta la leche".  Revisamos (we reviewed) la tarea "Los errores".  We did a speaking activity with a bunch of things from my teaching mochila.  In the 9:05 class we looked at the rules of thumb for identifying masculine and feminine words, and observed which ones must be memorized because there is no way of identifying their gender from their endings.  In the 12:15 class we ran out of time on that so I left it to you to study!  In both classes we didn't have much time to look at verbs, so keep studying them from Quizlet.

La tarea para el martes:
1) Only the 12:15 class has a take home quiz
2) Keep studying the verbs from this Quizlet set, and based on that, do the categorizing activity with verbs on page 43 of Convivencia.
3) Look over the reference page about gender and number on page 37 of Convivencia.  Using that information, do the activity on page 38, and the activity on page 39.
4) Keep studying this Quizlet set, and do the vocabulary matching activity on page 35.
5) You have a recording of the song "Me gusta la leche" that you made in class. Please memorize that song for Tuesday! If you missed class, it is on page 46 at the bottom of the page.

We will have a quiz on Tuesday on the two Quizlet sets and I will ask you to write down the words to the song "Me gusta la leche"!

¡Que tengan un muy buen fin de semana!

Resumen de la clase
I returned Quiz #1 and the paragraphs you wrote.  We reviewed page 29 and the activity on page 30.  I answered questions about the Learning Reports, and in the 9:05 class you took a quiz (en pares/in pairs) and in the 12:15 class we'll leave it until next Tuesday.

In Blackboard, for your learning reports, when you're composing your report...

If you missed the explanation for how to post the report on Blackboard, there is a Powerpoint on Blackboard (in Course Content) that explains how to do it.

La tarea
1) The learning report is due before Friday the 21st at midnight.  You have all weekend until Monday at midnight to answer 4 reports written by your compañeros.
2) SAM pp. 61, 62, 63, Actividades 10, 11, 12, 15

Semana 4: Martes el 18 de septiembre

9/19/2018

Resumen
We talked about significant dates around this time of year in Mexico.  You handed in your take-home quiz and the paragraphs (Activity 8).  We worked on the activity "Personas famosas" (p. 25 en Convivencia), and started to talk about Learning Reports (#1 due on Friday of this week).  In the 9:05 class we started to look at quotations I took from your responses to the chart about language learning and the growth mindset (p. 6-7 in Convivencia).  The reason for discussing your responses to the chart is that these ways of thinking about language learning will directly impact the decisions you make in your learning reports.  On Thursday we will continue discussing any questions you have about learning reports.  On Thursday the 12:15 class will also look at their responses to the chart.

La tarea para el jueves
1) The 9:05 class should finish reading the handout with your responses to chart on pp. 6-7.
2) Re-read the guidelines for the Learning Reports (last page of your syllabus, also on page 5 of Convivencia). Make sure you can find where to post your learning report on Blackboard (go onto Blackboard, and find the place).
3) Read page 29 in Convivencia, and do the activity on page 30 called "en una fiesta de bienvenida estudiantil."
4) Be prepared for an in-class closed book quiz on:  nationalities, occupations, numbers 1 to 100, a review of greetings and presentations.  Use the Quizlet sets to practice (all links are below).

Jueves, el 13 de septiembre

9/14/2018

Resumen:
We practiced using the verb "tener" to talk about things we had on our desks, and to state one's age.  We used Kahoot! to see how well that worked as a review or quiz.  We practiced numbers, nationalities, and reviewed homework.  In the 12:15 class, I introduced occupations.

La tarea para el martes:

1) Short take-home quiz
2) Continue to review previous Quizlet sets as needed.
3) Study Quizlet set (ocupaciones):
https://quizlet.com/_2y2aae
4) SAM p. 59 Actividades 5, 6, 7; p. 60 Actividad 9
5) Homework you will turn in:  p. 60 Actividad 8 (This is a paragraph--you can handwrite this or type it).

6) ALSO:  Start planning your Learning Report (due Friday next week).  We will discuss expectations more on Tuesday.

Semana 3: martes el 11 de septiembre

9/11/2018

Resumen de la clase:
The 9:05 class analyzed the difference between formal and informal introductions, the use of usted vs. tú, and how the norms of the formal vs informal "you" can vary between countries and even between communities and regions. We went over some questions about the homework and looked at the rules for using accents (acentuación).

In the 12:15 class we played Quizlet Live to reinforce the names of capitals and countries, reviewed numbers from 0 to 100 (and practiced with Quizlet Live) and looked at nationalities.  There were no questions about the homework so we didn't review it.

Even though we did very different things in both classes, I can still assign the same homework for both classes.

La tarea para el jueves:
1) Study the numbers on Quizlet from 0 to 100 (in the 9:05 class we'll talk on Thursday about the patterns you see):
https://quizlet.com/_2xfwvb
2) Do SAM Actividad 1 on page 57 to practice your numbers.
3) Study the nationalities on Quizlet:
https://quizlet.com/_2xfk70
4) Do SAM Actividad 3 on page 58 to practice nationalities.

We will have a quiz Thursday on the SAM Activities due today for homework (Actividades 1, 2, 5 on pages 17 and 18.

Semana 2: Jueves, el 6 de septiembre

9/6/2018

Resumen de la clase:
We worked on dictations in Spanish -- spelling our first and last names (nombres y apellidos) for each other in groups as if we were filling out forms, then we did a dictation to discriminate between letters, and finally a dictation spelling names of Latin American capitals.  We did a few trabalenguas (tongue twisters) to work on pronunciation of "ll," "rr" and "j".  In the 9:05 class we played Quizlet Live for capitals and countries, while in the 12:15 class we looked at the difference between formal and informal language when meeting people (use of Tú  y  Usted).

La tarea para el martes:
1) SAM (find it on Blackboard):  Page (página) 17 Actividades 1 y 2; página 18 Actividad 5; página 19 Actividad 8; página 21 Actividad 14.  Use the conjugation charts on page 27 of Convivencia as needed.  Check your answers in the answer key (also on Blackboard).

2) Practice conjugations of SER, ESTAR and LLAMARSE on Quizlet (make sure in "options" that you answer with the definition):
SER:  https://quizlet.com/_55tgbv
ESTAR:
https://quizlet.com/_55xkem
LLAMARSE:    https://quizlet.com/_55xm41

3) Learn the numbers 0 to 20 from this Quizlet set (you don't need to learn beyond 20 for Tuesday, but if you want to study ahead, keep going...!):
https://quizlet.com/_2xfwvb

A heads up:  We might have a quiz Tuesday on the SAM activities... Come in with questions if you had problems.

Semana 2: martes el 4 de septiembre

9/4/2018

Resumen de la clase (Summary of the Class):
We reviewed the homework -- the crossword puzzle (el crucigrama), the exercise on cognates (cognados), the matching exercise on useful expressions for the class (frases útiles para el salón de clase), and the alphabet (el alfabeto).

La tarea para el jueves (Homework for Thursday):

1) Practice spelling out your name, using the letters as they are said in Spanish.  Practice your first name, your last name, your friend's name, some family members' names.  If you need to review the alphabet, use the Quizlet set I assigned.
2) Start learning and practicing the pronunciation of countries and capitals in Spanish at these links:
